2 E. coli (Escherichia coli) is a type of bacteria commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains of E. coli are harmless, some can cause serious foodborne illnesses

Why in News?

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a food safety alert Tuesday regarding an E. coli outbreak that it says is linked with McDonald’s Quarter Pounders.

At least 49 illnesses have been reported across 10 states, including one death of an older person. Ten people have been hospitalized, including a child who had hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that can develop from an E. coli infection.

McDonald's Quarter Pounder hamburgers are making people sick, with most illnesses in Colorado and Nebraska.

E. coli symptoms:

Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F . Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving.

So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down

Signs of dehydration, such as:

Not peeing much

Dry mouth and throat

Feeling dizzy when standing up

Most people infected with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli experience severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting.

Symptoms usually start 3 to 4 days after swallowing the bacteria.

Most people recover without treatment after 5 to 7 days.

Some people may develop serious kidney problems (hemolytic uremic syndrome, also called HUS) and would need to be hospitalized.

  1. United Nations Day, on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter.
